LET'S TALK LIGHTING

Updated: Feb 4

Lighting is one of the areas we find homeowners struggle with the most. Between the ever evolving technology to the endless options for style, size, budget and light color, it can definitely be overwhelming. I worked in a lighting showroom for several years and learned a ton about the ins and outs of lighting. Combined with working as a designer for over a decade, here's our top things to consider when planning the lighting in your home:

  1. First and probably the most important is figure out what temperature of light you want (warm, daylight or cool). This is so important to make sure that you’re getting the light effect you like as well as making sure all the fixtures match as best they can. Our go-to is always a light temperature of 3000k. This is a nice neutral light that doesn’t read too warm or cool. Make sure to specify this number when selecting your pot lights and decorative fixtures to keep your main sources of light a consistent light color.

  2. Second, always add task lighting. Table and floor lamps are such a great way to add subtle warmth without being too bright and aggressive when you want a more cozy vibe.

  3. Last, use dimmers! When in doubt, add a dimmer to any lighting. It’s sometimes hard to know how a light will read when it’s on in the space. Having the option to slightly dim a fixture is always worth it.
