It’s no secret that bold and moody spaces are trending right now. In the Interior Design world, we’re seeing darker colours being used more and more in whole room applications as well as in stark contrast applications. We’re looking at some of our favourite ways this trend is being done and giving a few tips to help make this trend not feel too gloomy and cold. Let’s get into it!
I absolutely love this trend! It’s bold and dramatic but also has a sense of warmth and relaxation to it. We’re seeing this interior design trend in all rooms. From Washrooms, Bedrooms, Dens and Closets to Living and Family Rooms and everything in between. When it’s done right, this look is stunning and doesn’t need a lot of other statement elements in the room as the bold and dark colour typically has enough visual weight. I love seeing these rooms paired with clean simple patterns, textures and fixtures. Below are a few of my favourite spaces that have used this trend and what I love about them:
Moody & Organic Washroom

The subtle paneling on the wall and the textured window covering add so much depth and warmth to this space. The added tree branch also gives a feeling of warmth and nature. Also note, the window is also black, this look would not have the same effect if the window finish was white.
Bold Pantry/Kitchen

The black stained cabinetry, black countertops and black tile in this space are a huge statement that most homeowners would be hesitant to commit to! All the dark elements are perfectly balanced with lighter décor items that have texture and varying materials. The brass hardware and lighter grout also add some lightness to break up the dark elements and highlight the texture in the tile. We can’t get enough of this space!
Traditional Contrast

The contrast of dark and light paint and the patterned carpet used in this space is stunning. I love a good classic stripe and am completely in love with patterned carpets lately (when done right, of course).

Completely obsessed with the subtle sheen in the paint finish and the colour of this velvet sofa against the dark walls.
Our tips:
1. Paint out your casings, baseboards, and any other mouldings the same colour as your walls. This helps the room feel calm and not too busy. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, paint the ceiling to match as well, you won’t be disappointed!
2. Incorporate varying textures and materials to warm up the space and add subtle dimension. Think: Lush velvet fabrics, warm wood tones, natural and organic greenery, etc. A little goes a long way here. Don’t get too aggressive with bold patterns and busy materials. Less is almost always more. Remember to pick a couple statement items and let the other items in the room be calm and subtle.
3. Add wall paneling for a little extra drama and depth. This could be classic traditional mouldings or more modern, slat panels. The varying mouldings add depth to the room as the light reads differently on each element.
4. If you want a more glamourous look, add a satin or gloss finish to your paint. This is definitely a statement and doesn’t work for every space but when it’s done right, in more formal spaces, its stunning!
I hope this inspires you as you’re updating your current home or renovating or building and looking to go a little bold!
